When should poor sleep be medically evaluated?

Difficulty falling or staying asleep on most nights for three months or more, unrefreshing sleep despite adequate time in bed, loud snoring with witnessed pauses in breathing, or significant daytime sleepiness all warrant evaluation. Some of these point to sleep apnoea, which is a distinct condition requiring testing rather than a sleep aid.
