What is a GLP-1 medication?
GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications that mimic glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone the gut releases after eating. They act on receptors involved in appetite regulation, gastric emptying and insulin release. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are the two most widely prescribed in this class, though tirzepatide also acts on the GIP receptor. Whether one is appropriate for you is a clinical decision made after evaluation.
