What it measures
The principal oestrogen in circulation, produced in men largely by aromatisation of testosterone.
Why it is tracked
Estradiol has necessary functions in men including bone density, lipid handling and libido. Both excess and over-suppression cause problems, which is why it is measured rather than assumed and why aromatase inhibitors are used sparingly.
What a provider considers
- Rises with testosterone therapy and with higher body fat
- Requires a sensitive assay in men; standard assays are unreliable at male concentrations
- Interpreted with symptoms, never treated on a number alone
Reference ranges vary between laboratories and a single result rarely means much on its own. Interpretation depends on your symptoms, your other markers and the trend over time — which is what your provider reviews.
